Ecosun Achieves Highest FSEC Performance Rating Ever Recorded

Lakewood, NJ - Aquatherm Industries, Inc. announced today it has set a record in unglazed solar thermal performance with its flagship brand of solar pool heater, Ecosun®. The collector was tested at TÜV Rheinland PTL in Tempe, Arizona in accordance with the ISO 9806 Standard and performance certified by the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) at the University of Central Florida.

With an unprecedented FSEC performance rating of 1,100 Btus per square foot per day, Ecosun becomes the highest rated solar pool heating collector to ever be certified by the Florida Solar Energy Center.

Ecosun joins a growing list of solar thermal collectors being tested to ISO 9806 standards, as it gains popularity over the outdated ASHRAE 9680 standards. The key difference between the ISO 9806 testing standard and its predecessor stems from a more controlled testing environment. The ASHRAE 9680 standard only allowed wind speeds up to 3 mph across the surface of the solar collector. Because of this, a collectors rating could vary greatly from test to test, depending on the wind speed during testing.

Conversely, ISO 9806 standards measure performance at three preset wind speeds in order to most accurately model real-world performance. Performance ratings are then determined by using a weighted average of these wind speeds at various thermal efficiencies.

The world’s first true “hybrid” solar pool heating collector, Ecosun combines maximum surface area and thermal performance with the wind-load relief of a vented collector. A number of unique features contribute to Ecosun’s rating, including a fluted tube-and-web design that increases the collector’s surface area by 10%; a patented ventilation system that activates only when required; and a direct-feed, metered-flow manifold for balanced flow and optimized heat gain throughout the entire system.

When installed using Aquatherm’s stainless steel Eagle Claw® mounting components, the Ecosun Solar Pool Heater provides a superior heating performance for even the most demanding pool owner. Ecosun is available in either a 1.5” or 2” design, for both residential and commercial pool heating applications.

Aquatherm Passes ISO Inspection; Maintains ISO 9001:2008 Registration

Lakewood, NJ— The largest manufacturer of solar pool heaters in the United States, Aquatherm Industries, Inc., announced today it has passed an annual ISO audit inspection conducted by QAS International and will maintain its ISO 9001:2008 registration. The ISO 9001:2008 standard pertains to the systems and methodologies used in an organization’s quality policies. Per the official ISO audit summary, no non-conformities were found in the manufacturer’s quality management system (QMS). The lead auditor found Aquatherm’s quality policy to be both “established and effectively communicated throughout the organization,” and also noted “continual improvement is evident.”

“Quality is our number one priority at Aquatherm,” says Dave Sizelove, Aquatherm President and CEO.

“I believe we exist solely to provide our customers with the tools they need to succeed in this industry, and that means providing a quality product with equal quality customer service. Maintaining our ISO registration requires us to continually refocus on improving quality control policies and systems.”

At the time of its initial ISO registration in 2011, Aquatherm was the only U.S. manufacturer of solar collectors—including both thermal and photovoltaic technologies—to achieve the standard; it currently remains the only U.S. manufacturer of solar thermal collectors and system components to be ISO registered.

About Aquatherm:

An ISO 9001:2008 registered company, Aquatherm Industries, Inc. is the largest U.S. manufacturer of low-temperature, unglazed polymer solar collectors – primarily used for residential and commercial swimming pool heating as well as domestic hot water and process pre-heat applications. Within the company’s “pellets to panels” approach, Aquatherm’s extrusion, welding, and injection molding processes have been awarded four U.S. and two International Patents for its technology. In addition, Aquatherm’s collectors were the first NSF-50 listed solar collectors in the word. Aquatherm distributors currently serve Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, all of North, Central, and South America, France, Egypt, and Jordan.

Dennis Esposito Named Manufacturer’s Representative for Ultrasun

Aquatherm Industries, Inc., the nation’s largest manufacturer of swimming pool solar heaters, announced today it has appointed Dennis Esposito, owner of Performance Solar in Escondido, CA, as a manufacturer’s representative for its newest product, the Ultrasun Solar Pool Heater, in the states of California and Arizona, as well as within Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Dennis Esposito and Performance Solar have been synonymous with solar pool heating in the southern California marketplace for 20 years,” says Dave Sizelove, President and CEO of Aquatherm. “This next step for Dennis and his team at Performance follows the Aquatherm model of taking a successful retail organization and using their accumulated knowledge and experience to develop a Dealer Network.”

The newest of Aquatherm’s “flagship brands,” the Ultrasun panel was introduced in 2012 under limited release, and has been well-received within the industry. Several innovations in solar pool heater design make Ultrasun dramatically different from its predecessors, and have earned the product three U.S. Patents. The panel’s key difference lies in the header-to-tube connection, by which the header manifold is insert-molded around the absorber plate, by way of a patented “stem-block.” This stem-block is permanently embedded in the absorber plate’s riser tubes, and acts as an expansion/contraction bridge between the header and absorber. The manufacturer’s patented process of venting the absorber plate, by which no material is removed from the panel, results in maximum surface area while still offering the benefits of roof-ventilation and wind-load relief in extreme weather conditions.

The relationship between Aquatherm Industries and Mr. Esposito’s Performance Solar dates back 18 years to 1995, when Performance began selling and installing the manufacturer’s Ecosun Solar Pool Heater. A number of years later, Performance Solar began carrying a competitive brand of solar pool heaters, but later returned to once again offer Aquatherm products.

“We’re excited to take our business to the next level, and ready to grow the Ultrasun brand,” said Esposito. “We know we’ve got a premium product from a quality manufacturer. Now, we’re looking forward to setting up Dealers in the southwest, and helping them grow their business the same way Aquatherm has helped us grow ours.”

Aquatherm Increases Energy Efficiency in Solar Collector Manufacturing

The largest manufacturer of solar pool heaters and solar pool heating system components in the United States announced today it has increased collector manufacturing energy efficiency by 18%. Aquatherm Industries, manufacturer of the Solar Industries, Ecosun, Ultrasun, Ultra-Swim, Sun-Swim, Ecolite, and Sunlite brands of solar pool heaters, attributes the increase to improved processes, new technologies, and improved quality control procedures as a result of registration as an ISO 9001:2008 company.

Lakewood, NJ – May 7, 2013 – Aquatherm Industries, Inc. of Lakewood, NJ announced today it has increased energy efficiency of its solar pool heater collector manufacturing by 18%. Through improved processes developed over 35 years of solar manufacturing experience, the manufacturer has been able to reduce the amount of energy required to produce its efficient solar pool heating systems.

Dave Sizelove, President and Co-Founder of Aquatherm Industries, cites these efficiency improvements as a direct result of improved manufacturing processes and quality control. “Through the years, Aquatherm has remained committed to solar pool heating, while other manufacturers have diversified into other solar technologies such as hot water and photovoltaic,” says Sizelove.

“Our commitment to solar pool heating has resulted in a laser focus, and has allowed us to innovate and improve on the technology time and time again.”

Sizelove also credits the manufacturer’s 2011 registration as an ISO 9001:2008 company for improving quality control inside the walls of its 50,000 square foot facility. ISO 9001:2008 is a quality management system developed by the International Organization of Standardization requires a manufacturer demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

“Aquatherm has always been dedicated to making a quality product. Through the process of becoming ISO-registered, we pursued even greater levels of quality control – from the minute raw materials enter the building to the shipment of finished product. This, in turn, resulted in the creation of less waste in our facility, which helped to increase our process efficiencies.”

Aquatherm was recognized earlier this year for its eco-friendly efforts by the New Jersey Department of Department of Environmental Protection Environmental Stewardship Initiative, which it hopes to parlay into an ISO 14001 certification.

“Being a polymer product and therefore derived from oil,” says Sizelove, “the process by which we manufacture our product is already inherently energy efficient compared to the alternative. If you were to take three gallons of oil and refine and burn it using a conventional fossil-fuel pool heater, that three gallons would provide about 400,000 British thermal units (BTUs) one time only. By using that same three gallons to manufacture one 4′ x 12′ solar pool heating collector, you are creating a product that will produce over 10,000,000 BTUs a year, and keeps producing year after year.”

Press Release: Aquatherm Industries Releases Design Upgrade for its 2″ Solar Pool Vacuum Breaker Assembly

Lakewood, NJ - The largest U.S. manufacturer of solar pool heating systems has just released a redesigned vacuum breaker which is now compatible with all brands of solar pool heating systems, including FAFCO Sunsaver and Revolution, Techno-Solis, Solar Hydronics Hi-Tec, Guardian and Suntrek collectors.

The newly released heavy duty vacuum breaker includes a reinforced housing, corrosion-free stainless steel spring and filter screens, and a chemical resistant Viton o-ring.

Previously, Aquatherm’s design could not be used with competitive systems due to the varying types of coupler hoses used to connect those collectors. The addition of a proprietary slide-lock on the solar pool vacuum breaker housing allows the part to be used in and make and model collector with 2″ header manifolds.

When used with Aquatherm’s own dual-durometer EPDM connector hoses, improvements on the design permits higher stagnation temperatures. The new vacuum breakers are currently available from all Aquatherm Regional Distribution Centers.

Aquatherm Industries Hits Price Per BTU Breakthrough

Lakewood, NJ – Aquatherm Industries, the largest U.S. manufacturer of swimming pool solar heating systems, announced a breakthrough in solar pool heater cost today as it has broken the $2 (USD)/sq. ft. mark for its Sunlite™ brand of pool solar heating systems.  The manufacturer believes this pricing is unprecedented in unglazed solar themal, and cites several factors which have allowed it to reduce long run average costs and break the $2/sq. ft. price point threshold.

The manufacturer reports its initial investment in machinery and tooling for Sunlite™ has been completely amortized – over the course of its 25 million square foot total production – since being introduced in 2000.  Over that time, improved production efficiencies and quality control processes have resulted in less waste and helped to lower production costs.

With two patents currently protecting Aquatherm’s Sunlite™ product, the manufacturer has garnered a nearly 53% market share in the industry.  The pool solar panel’s unique “insert-molded” header design was recognized as a breakthrough in solar pool heating technology when the product launched a decade ago, and continues to set the standard for the industry moving forward.

Aquatherm also cites economies of scale as a major influencing factor on pricing.  In 2005, the Lakewood, NJ factory underwent a 25,000 square foot expansion – effectively doubling the building’s total size.  With the addition of roughly 15,000 square feet of warehouse space, the manufacturer has been able to make larger bulk purchases of its specially-formulated polypropylene resin from suppliers, further reducing costs.

Using performance rating data from the independent Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) – which measures a solar collector’s ability to efficiently transfer thermal energy from the sun into usable heat (in the case of solar thermal, BTUs) – Sunlite™ is rated at 1,000 BTUs per square foot.  Based on the manufacturer’s newly released pricing, Sunlite™ carries a price per BTU of only $0.002 – making it the most cost-effective BTU on the planet. Sunlite Solar Pool Heaters can be found on the web at www.sunlitesolar.com.

Eglin Air Force Base Saves $24,000 with Solar Pool Heater

Operation:  Swim Warm

At Eglin Air Force Base in Valparaiso, FL, the nearly 14,000 square foot pool is used for recruit training and exercise, as well as recreation and leisure for those stationed at the base and their families. But for facility operators, the cost of keeping the pool warm enough to use was costing the base upwards of several thousand dollars each month. Solar thermal was proposed as the most cost-effective alternative to the existing gas-powered boiler, and an invitation to bid went out.

Sean Gardner, owner of Compass Solar in Pensacola, FL, has been selling and installing the Ecosun Solar Pool Heating System in the Florida panhandle for over 10 years, with a number of large commercial projects under his belt. Sean’s experience and dedication to quality has helped him achieve the elite distinction of becoming an Ecosun Master Dealer. Though the Eglin installation would be his largest to date, Sean eagerly threw his hat in the ring for the project.

Sean explained to facility operators how his proposed design – an array of 164 black polypropylene collectors (often referred to as panels) – could dramatically reduce their operating costs by harnessing the sun’s free energy. Each collector is divided into just over 100 small tubes that water runs directly through.  As the pool water circulates through the collectors, over 1,000 BTUs of thermal energy per square foot are absorbed by the water before returning to the pool.

Based on Sean’s comprehensive payback analysis and experience, Compass Solar was awarded the bid.  The collectors were mounted on eight custom all-aluminum ground racks adjacent to the pool, ranging in size from 52’ long to as long as 104’ long.  The racks were then anchored by 160 2’ x 4’ concrete footers poured using round forms. Thanks to Ecosun’s highest-rated vented solar pool heating collector design, the system can withstand 140 mile-per-hour winds of three second gusts.

With the housing market stagnant and new pool construction still down, there has been a natural shift in most Dealers’ markets toward larger commercial pools and aquatic facilities.  “This was definitely the largest solar pool heating project we had ever taken on,” says Sean, “but thanks to my crew and everyone involved, it was also one of the most fun.”

When operational, the solar array is capable of heating over 650 gallons of pool water, per minute.  The system is expected to generate 5.9 million BTUs daily, offsetting approximately 1.7 Megawatts daily. Capable of consistently providing temperatures of 85 to 95 degrees from March to December, the system can be adjusted by raising or lowering a thermostat-style knob.  The collectors will be drained during the colder months to prevent freezing, and the existing gas-powered boiler will handle the heating load.

“The goal of the $177,175 project is to reduce gas consumption and up-keep on the existing boiler,” according to Pablo Cruz, of the 96th Civil Engineer Group. “The solar pool heater is expected to save the base $24,000 per year and should pay for itself in approximately seven years.”

Eglin Air Force Base joins a growing number of military bases going solar in an attempt to reduce operating costs and go green.  With an ongoing push by the United States government to go green, most military installations start with their biggest energy hogs – in many cases a swimming pool or aquatic training facility. Heating a pool with natural gas, propane, or electric by means of a conventional fossil-fuel heater consumes a massive amount of energy and can cost thousands of dollars a month to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Aquatherm Solar Pool Heaters receive NSF-50 certification

Aquatherm Industries is proud to announce we have become the first and only manufacturer to receive NSF-50 certification for solar pool heating systems.

Certification includes: material safety, corrosion resistance, design and construction, product marking, dimensional testing, hydrostatic pressure testing at 1.5x the working pressure, design burst pressure testing at 2.0x the working pressure, head loss or pressure loss testing, 20,000 cycle high/low pressure testing, high temperature burst pressure safety testing, marking, and labeling requirements.

“We are excited to have the first and only solar pool heating collector to be certified by NSF, which adds tremendous credibility to the Aquatherm brand image in the commercial pool market as well as a powerful tool for the Aquatherm Dealer Network,” said David Sizelove, President of Aquatherm. “Residential pool owners and their families can also rest assured, knowing their solar pool heater and the water they swim in is safe.”
